Early Morning Turkey Hunt

Early Morning turkey Hunt

I got up this morning and went turkey hunting, although I got no turkey it was yet another incredible experience as I put myself in the midst of the bustling forest spring.

I have been spending an increasing amount of time at the bush lately, and have been so intrigued but all the life and action I have over looked in the past.  My day started at about 4:45am when my alarm went off and I pried myself out of bed.  I grabbed something quick to eat, got my Nikon, my Remington pump, suited up in the iconic mossy oak camouflage and headed out.  I got to the our property just as the sky was beginning to show the first hint of blue.  I set up my self with my back to a moss covered log in a little hard wood clearing, and proceeded to call.  I sat for about an hour and nothing was happening, until I heard a rustle behind me.  I turned around and found this little porcupine about 2 meters away from me walking around.  Being a little to close for my comfort, I waived my hand at him to shoo him away (not that he proved to be much of a threat).  When he saw me he froze and stared at me carefully, a little confused.  He slowly turned the tree to his left and proceeded to climb it.  (He climbed in a way I would imagine a koala bear would climb a tree) But after getting a little ways up he decided against it and sauntered away at a leisurely pace (clearly I don't look as intimidating as I thought I did).

After another uneventful hour I decided to take a walk to the front of our property.  On my out I noticed the little guy again, so I ran back to the car, grabbed my camera and snapped this picture.

Arriving at the wetlands at the front of property I was taken back the scene,  the sun had just risen over the tree tops and the beams cascaded through steam coming off the cold water into the warm spring air.  I figured it was a lovely photo moment so I hoped out of the Escape and headed for a small grass strip in the center of the marsh.  I was just about in the center of this grass island when a huge 50 pound Canada goose launches itself from what I assume was it's sleeping arrangements in the long dried gas slams itself down in the water about 10 feet from my.  I retreated back to land, one more close call with the wildlife of the Stansfield property.
   Got some neat photos...

Then on my way back home, to top it all off I have another to close experience with an animal, this time it was a turkey.  A stones throw away.  Behind a fence.  On private property.  Damn.
All in all it was a lovely morning, wouldn't trade it for anything, even sleeping in!
